US text message rules: consent and opt-out basics

The basics of consent, opt-out and content for businesses that send text messages to US customers.

Two kinds of text

A text that answers a customer or confirms something they asked for is different from a marketing or promotional text. Marketing texts carry the strictest rules.

Before you send a marketing text, the person should have clearly agreed to receive it from you. Keep a record of when and how they agreed. Consent for one purpose does not cover another.

Make opting out easy

Tell people how to stop messages, and stop straight away when they ask. Common requests include STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE and CANCEL.

Say who you are

Every message should make clear who is sending it. Do not hide or falsify the sender.

Carriers filter messages

US carriers filter traffic they consider unwanted and may require registration for some kinds of messaging. Delivery is never guaranteed. Check current carrier and legal requirements before you send at volume.

What we do not allow

Phishing, scams, illegal content, harassment and misleading senders are not allowed. See the messaging policy for the full rules. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
